Civil War Muff...or Fuzz

Totally love this pedal! It has the big think bottom sound to it, but it has a smoothness to it that is really hard to describe. How can a pedal have that Muff bottom and boom, and still be so smooth sounding?? Never mind the one or two YouTube clips that demo this pedal. Believe me, they do this NO JUSTICE. This is all redundant, I know. There is a reason the originals are so highly sought after and are in demand.

When I place my Colorsound PB behind it, the possibilities increase even more. I can hear how David used this on TDB, I just can't stop playing around with it enough to figure it out.

Would it make any sense if I said it sounds almost like a cello? To me, it has the same type propreties. How about if I said it gives me a sound so thick, large and smooth, that when standing in front of my amp, it literally feels as if I could throw my leg over the top of it and ride it down the highway. Simply incredible. I have played the guitar since 1986. I have had an impressive amount of gear, over this period, but I have NEVER had the sound that I have now! The CWM is key to this. I haven't had the nerve yet to yank the Large Beaver from my pedaltrain, but it is now eating real estate.

Sound Quality:

Now the sound. Where do I even begin? Again, I am not even a novice in the arena of components and sound values. I just know what I am looking for, and what I like!

The CWM, to me, sounds more MLR-era (1986 Pink Floyd). I know David (Gilmour) used his on TDB as well, and probably more based on my set-up/rig. My OD stompboxes are as follows: Vintage Rat (RI), BYOC Large Beaver (RH), BD-2 (non-mod), Torn's Peaker (devi ever's fuzz), Colorsound PB, Butler TD (PULSE Era), I know that I am missing one or two from my listing..that is just how good the CWM is!! I don't even remember my pedals!! Seriously. The CWM has taken the number one slot on my board. I love this pedal!!

The SUF pedals also require no compressor or boosting, they sound good enough on their own!!

Reliability/Durability:

I have had no issues, and do not foresee any. The pedal is very solid and solid build. I have never seen so much care taken in the construction of a pedal! Matt's passion for sound and reputation are examplified in his pedals.

Ease of Use:

Volume, Sustain (distortion), and tone. Input and output, does not get an easier to use.

Customer Support:

Matt is very responsive and stands behind his products.

Overall Rating:

First and foremost Matt. What a gentleman and a total pleasure to do business with. Not only that, he does know his stuff. In an instant I feel totally stupid when reading his descriptions and component values. Matt is in a league all his own; however, he is extremely patient and VERY easy to ask those questions to. I was also impressed with his responsiveness.

I first read about SUF pedal on the gilmourish.com site. Just in a brief one statement phrase that SUF are a company that makes Muff clones. That is all that I needed to read. I started the search.

I had entertained, and still do, the purchase of Matt's Green Russian Muff. Unfortunately, I waited one day too late. Good news, Matt was (is) willing to mod his Civil War variant to Green Russian specs.

$145.00 may seem a bit steep, but if you take into consideration what you are getting and the sound of it...I feel almost guilty only paying that much!!

If you have the “readies”, and may be (or have been) debating it, STOP now. You need this pedal. The samples of on the SUF site, and YouTube, are close, but it still really doesn't do this pedal justice. This pedal is really cool.

Incredible product and service!!

I hope this helps. I know there are others here with this pedal, and maybe over time, my reviewing skills will improve.

If you are looking for that vintage Muff sound, then this IS your pedal!!

This is meant to be more of a "review", and not a love song to SUF. If it does, well, there's a reason for that too.

Civil War Muff

Review By:

Reviewer Background:
Semi-retired semi-pro player
Purchased From:
StompUnderFoot.com
Price:
$145.00 USD
Features:

Unlike the vintage Sovtek units, this one runs on a Boss-style power adapter. I'm all for keeping batteries out of landfills, ergo I'm all for keeping them out of my pedals.

Beyond that, it's true bypass switching and a bright white-blue LED. Knobs are as they always are on a Muff distortion/fuzz pedal: Volume, Tone, Sustain.

Sound Quality:

I had been looking for a great low-end in a fuzz. I could get the fizzy, splatty fuzzes but was generally not impressed with bass response. I turned from fuzz to high-gain distortion for a while, then a fuzz goosed with a dark overdrive, but nothing was really getting me there.

I am impressed with the overall tone of this pedal as well as the low noise floor in the unit. Switching is pop-less, bypassed tone is solid (as it should be in a TB pedal).

Reliability/Durability:

I haven't had it long enough to break it, but a look at the guts shows it's been well wired. I don't fear using this thing at all. A die-cast box with a hand-wired circuit and a sturdy stomp switch is hard to break!

Ease of Use:

It's dead easy. It's a 3-knob fuzz.

Customer Support:

SUF is a one-man operation and that man is quick on email and easy to deal with.

Overall Rating:

This little grey box gives me the fuzz tone that I've been trying to get. I'm a big fan of Dinosaur Jr and Apples In Stereo's fuzz tones: heavy on the bass and long on the sustain. I listened to all six Muff models SUF makes via the sound clips on their site and this one is definitely the right choice. The bass response lets palm-muted chords chug, mid-octave single note runs have a fantastic thickness to them and high solos scream without squealing. I still have note clarity in open chords, which is an absolute MUST in my book. No offense to Mike Matthews, but Sovtek NEVER made them like THIS.

In terms of features, it's a muff.  Tone, Volume, and Sustain.  And that's all you need.

Sound Quality:

Before this, the only Big Muff I owned was a black russian.  You could dial in a great sound with it, but it was pretty much a one-trick pony.  I wanted something that could give me that amazing Gilmour sustain, but could still crunch out some Pumpkins as well.  I ordered this one based on the samples on Matt's (SOF) website, on the recommendation of a friend.  I have NEVER been this happy with a pedal purchase.  My other muff, I had to dial in just right to get a good sound...this one, I can't get a bad sound out of it - I simply can't believe the variety of sound you can get by twisting the sustain and tone knobs - and they all sound great! One thing that really impresses me is the note definition...even at high gain levels when you've got the sustain cranked, the individual notes ring out (whereas on my black russian they get completely lost in the fuzz).  The perfect blend of definition and chaos.

I wasn't sure whether to shout about Stomp Under Foot from the hilltops, or keep it a secret so that people wonder how I get that amazing tone - I'll do the former, as Matt deserves the business.  You can find more expensive muffs, but I promise you'll never find one that sounds better than the ones Stomp Under Foot is putting out.

Reliability/Durability:

I've only had it a few weeks, so I haven't tested the durability, but it seems very stout, and the internal workmanship is first rate.  Open it up when you get it, just to see the wonderful work!

Ease of Use:

It's a muff, with three knobs.  Can't get easier than that.  But you can dial up lots of sounds from this little monster.

Customer Support:

Great communication, and you'll want to be on Matt's mailing list - as he occasional has a pedal to sell at a deep discount due to a cosmetic blemish....and a good muff only gets cooler as it looks beat-up, IMO.

Overall Rating:

I can't imagine ever needing another fuzz pedal, but I'm already thinking of ordering another from Stomp Under Foot - maybe their fuzzface clone.  Check out the website and listen to the samples...I bet you'll be hooked.  I considered Devi Ever and a number of other fuzzes before ordering this one, and nothing else even came close.

Civil War Muff Clone

I run my signal chain as follows; EJ Strat with DG-20s and Callaham bridge, Boss CS2, CW Muff, BK Butler set for volume, carbon copy into the number (1) Input of my Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue, which uses a Weber 12" ceramic Blue Dog speaker with a custom 1/4-spade terminal Pete Cornish HD-1 speaker cable. I replaced an AA Green Russian with this pedal, I was after the Gilmour PULSE tone, and this pedal has got me much closer. I set the pedal with Sustain on 100%, the tone anywhere between 30 and 50% and the volume at unity. This pedal gets me very close to the PULSE tone, think the intro to Sorrow, and Comfortably Numb! The pedal isnt very noisy at all, considering how much gain is on offer.
Reliability/Durability:
I cant comment on the reliability, as Ive not had any problems with it, but it looks very sturdy.
Ease of Use:
Its a muff clone, only 3 controls, Volume, Tone and Sustain, no manual was provided, but its not needed.
Customer Support:
Matt is a superb guy, he responds to emails promptly, and will always try to accommodate.
Overall Rating:
This pedal was a great purchase, if it were lost or stolen, I would ask Matt to build me another in a heartbeat, and perhaps one of his other clones in the process! I cannot compare it to a real Civil War muff, as I have never played, or owned one, however, if its close to David's tones, it cant be that far off a real one!

It gives you that"gargantuan"sound that no othere type of pedal will and does it in a very musical and pleasing way.To hear how this sounds search you tube vintage big muff demo. This pedal is an exact copy of it that matt built specially for me.I now understand he is continuing with production of it.I have the honour of having #1! The pedal favours over the original-a smaller enclosure'more usable tone control' true bypass' better build quality and without the extortinate price tag!!It also does a reasonable hendrix impression even though its not a fuzz face. It also can give you a "sweet" lead tone if you tweak it but thats not really what you buy a fuzz pedal for!Don't forget that was all hendrix and the like had then!
Reliability/Durability:
excellent build quality
Ease of Use:
Extremley easy to use and find the sweetspot and other settings The tone control is very usable The gain can vary the pedal from a crisp chunk to a full on mega-howl!Try turning the gain knob up with your foot at the end of a song great fun!
Customer Support:
matt is a friendly and helpful guy answered all my e mails and let me know progress of pedal pedal was (i consider) priced very reasonably and i wouldn't hesitate to buy another pedal from him.
Overall Rating:
I tirelessly try 'modify and use some of (what i consider)the best sounding gear available. Some of this may suprise the boutique brigade as it does not have a huge price tag and name.I have owned and played all the classic gear and lots of modern/boutique stuff as well.I think that a well built guitar rig strikes a balance betweeen these two camps.Truthfully the sound is all in your hands and you head anyway .Quality gear will always enhance this.
